Wolf, Hugo (1860-1903)

Perchtoldsdorf. - The courtyard of the house Brunner Gasse 26, where the composer spent many winters. It belonged to the married couple Heinrich and Marie Werner, who did not use the summer house on the edge of the Vienna Woods themselves during the cold season and left it to the composer, who was constantly short of money. Wolf created no less than 116 songs here; the musical quotation shows the beginning of "Verborgenheit" ("Seclusion"), to a text by Eduard Mörike: "Lass, o Welt, o lass mich sein!" ("Let, O world, O let me be!").

Hand-colored etching by Herta Czoernig-Gobanz (1886-1970), estate signed. Plate size 20,5 x 18,5 cm (8 x 7¼ in), sheet size 35 x 29 cm (13¾ x 11½ in).
