Haydn, Joseph (1732-1809)

Vienna, Michaelerplatz. - From 1751 to 1756 the composer lived in an attic room of "Großes Michaelerhaus" (No. 4) in the city center of Vienna. At that time he was valet to the Italian composer Nicola Porpora, who lived in the same house, and gave piano lessons (for free food) to the later singer, pianist and composer Marianne Martinez, who also lived there. The picture also shows the neighbouring church "Michaelerkirche", where Haydn played the organ in 1749. The musical quotation is an excerpt from the oratorio "The Creation" (Hob. XXI:2), which was played for the first time in 1799 in the old Burgtheater in Vienna.
