Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897)


Birthplace. - The "Gängeviertel" quarter in Hamburg with its typical half-timbered houses. The actual birthplace of the composer in the Caffamacherreihe street was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1943 and could no longer be depicted by the artist. The musical quotation is taken from the "Three Intermezzi" (op. 117) written in 1892 and shows the beginning of the first piano piece; it is inspired by a Scottish lullaby arranged by Johann Gottfried von Herder.

Hand-colored etching by Herta Czoernig-Gobanz (1886-1970), estate signed. Plate size 20,5 x 19 cm (8 x 7½ in), sheet size 35 x 29 cm (13¾ x 11½ in).
