Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827)

Vienna-Alsergrund, Schwarzspanierhaus. - To the right of the church is the new building of the house at Schwarzspanierstraße 9. At this location Beethoven spent his final years (from October 1825), and he died there on March 26, 1827. Three days later, approximately 20,000 people accompanied him from there to the church where the funeral service was held and on to the Währing local cemetery. In 1903 the apartment building, which had served as the convent building of the Schwarzspanier monastery until 1780, was demolished despite protests from the population; only wooden remains from Beethoven's apartment were transfered to a museum. A plaque on the façade of the new building commemorates the composer. The musical quotation "Seid umschlungen Millionen / diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt!" ("Be embraced, Millions / This kiss to all the world!") is taken from the "Ode to Joy" based on a poem by Friedrich Schiller from the finale of Symphony No. 9.
